Artificial Grass vs Natural Grass in Dubai: Cost and Care

Artificial grass costs more to install but much less to run. Natural grass is cheaper on day one, cooler underfoot and the better choice in partial shade, but it needs daily summer watering and weekly care. In many Dubai gardens, the best answer to artificial grass vs natural grass is to use both, each where it works best.
This guide compares the two on cost, water, heat and upkeep, explains why published prices disagree, and shows how to split a garden between them. It is written by the team behind our lawn and landscape installation work.
Choose… | If this sounds like your garden |
|---|---|
Artificial grass | Full sun, heavy use by children or dogs, no gardener, a pool surround, or a balcony or roof terrace |
Natural grass | Partly shaded areas, light use, a gardener or weekly care already in place, and you want the real feel and a cooler surface |
Both | A villa garden with a sunny pool or play area and a shaded seating lawn |
Artificial Grass vs Natural Grass in Dubai, Side by Side
The biggest differences are when you pay and how much time each lawn takes. These are the figures from a detailed 2026 Dubai landscaping guide:
Factor | Natural grass | Artificial grass |
|---|---|---|
Installation | About AED 10–15 per sq ft | About AED 20–50 per sq ft |
Yearly upkeep (medium villa) | About AED 3,000–4,000 | About AED 500–1,500 |
Water | Daily irrigation in summer | None after installation |
Your time each week | 2–3 hours | 10–15 minutes |
Surface on a hot summer day | About 30–35°C | About 45–70°C, depending on quality |
Lifespan | Needs patching; often major repair every 3–5 years | Premium: 10–15 years. Budget: 3–5 years |
Works on balconies and roofs | No | Yes |

What Does Each Cost per Square Metre?
Expect roughly AED 108–161 per square metre for natural grass and AED 215–538 for artificial, based on the 2026 per-square-foot figures above. Online prices vary far more than that, for four reasons:
- Different units. Some guides quote per square foot and others per square metre. A square metre is 10.764 square feet, so the same lawn can look ten times cheaper or dearer.
- What is included? Natural grass prices may or may not include soil preparation and laying. Artificial prices may or may not include the sub-base, weed membrane, infill and labour.
- Turf grade. The same 2026 guide puts budget artificial turf at about AED 15–20 per sq ft and premium at about AED 30–40 per sq ft or more.
- The date. Older guides still rank in search and show much lower prices.

What Does Each Cost to Run?
Natural grass costs more to run every year, mainly because of water. DEWA has billed residential water per cubic metre since March 2025, on rising slabs. Published 2026 guides list about AED 7.70 per cubic metre for the first 27 cubic metres a month, about AED 8.80 for the next 27, and about AED 10.12 above 54, plus a fuel surcharge and VAT. Villas with gardens often reach the top slab. You can check current rates on DEWA’s website.
The 2026 Golden Seed guide estimates water for a medium villa lawn at roughly AED 6,000–10,000 a year, before maintenance. It puts natural-grass upkeep at about AED 3,000–5,000 a year (or AED 200–400 a month if outsourced), against about AED 500–1,000 for artificial turf. By its figures, the two options reach the same total cost somewhere between years five and seven, after which artificial is cheaper.
Your own numbers depend on lawn size, shade and how carefully the irrigation is set up. Your past summer DEWA bills are the best guide to what a lawn adds.
Heat, Kids and Pets: The Honest Trade-Off
Natural grass is cooler. Unshaded artificial turf can get too hot for bare feet at midday from June to August. The same 2026 guide reports a study in the journal Building and Environment that measured artificial turf surfaces at up to 71.6°C in summer. Natural grass stays around 30–35°C on a 40°C day because it releases moisture.
Shade is the practical fix. Turf under a pergola, shade sail or tree stays much cooler, and morning and evening use is comfortable even in summer.
For pets, artificial turf has advantages: a perforated backing drains urine, and enzyme cleaners control smell. On natural grass, dogs using the same spot leave dead patches, and play areas wear into bare ground that turns to mud when watered.
Zone by Zone: Using Both in One Garden
You do not have to choose one lawn for the whole garden. Matching each zone to the surface that suits it gives you the look of real grass where you sit, and low effort where you play and swim.
Garden zone | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
Pool surround | Artificial | No mud or clippings in the water, drains well and handles wet feet. See our garden and pool layouts. |
Partly shaded seating lawn | Natural | Cooler underfoot, softer and more natural. Grass needs some sun, so avoid deep shade. |
Deep shade under dense trees | Neither | Grass struggles and turf can look out of place. Use paving, gravel or shade-loving planting. |
Full-sun children’s play area | Artificial, with shade | Handles heavy use; add a shade sail over the main play zone. |
Front yard | Artificial, or natural with a gardener | Looks the same all year; natural only if weekly care is in place. |
Side passages and narrow strips | Artificial or gravel | Hard to water and mow evenly. |
Balcony or roof terrace | Artificial only | No soil depth for natural grass. Check building rules first. |

What to Check in Any Lawn Quote
Ask for a line-by-line quote. A single lump sum hides the items that decide whether a lawn lasts.
For artificial grass, ask about | For natural grass, ask about |
|---|---|
Turf grade and fibre type | Grass variety (for example Paspalum or Bermuda) |
UV warranty in writing, covering outdoor UAE use | Soil preparation and how much new soil is added |
Sub-base: crushed stone and compacted sand | Irrigation design, zones and controller |
Infill type and amount | How long the lawn takes to establish, and who waters it until then |
Drainage and edging details | Who maintains it, and how often |
Separate lines for supply, base, infill and labour | Separate lines for grass, soil, irrigation and labour |
How We Approach Lawn Projects
Zia Luxury’s experts start with the garden, not the product. We check sun and shade through the day, drainage and how the space is used, then recommend natural, artificial or a mix by zone. You get an itemised quote, with all costs listed upfront after a short scope call.
What a lawn cannot do: natural grass will not thrive in deep shade or without reliable irrigation. Unshaded artificial turf will be hot at midday in summer. Neither will fix poor drainage unless the base is prepared properly. If you rent, get written approval before changing the garden.
Frequently Asked Question
Premium artificial turf with UV-stabilised fibres and proper installation typically lasts 10–15 years in UAE conditions, according to a 2026 Dubai landscaping guide. Budget turf without enough UV protection can break down within 3–5 years. Ask for the UV warranty in writing and check that it covers outdoor use in the UAE.
Unshaded artificial turf can get far hotter than natural grass. One Dubai guide reports natural grass at about 30–35°C on a 40°C day, against 45–70°C for artificial turf depending on quality. Shade is the most reliable fix, so plan a pergola or shade sail over the main play or seating area.
Paspalum and Bermuda are the varieties most often recommended for Dubai gardens. Paspalum copes well with salty water. Bermuda gives a dense, soft lawn but needs sun and does not grow well in full shade. Either one needs good soil preparation, because most local ground is sand with little organic matter.
Ask first. Changing a garden is an alteration, so check with your landlord, and with the master developer if the community has rules on gardens. Get the approval in writing. Artificial turf can be laid in sections, which makes it easier to lift and take with you if you move.
